Founded in 1804, Kazan University is the second oldest classic university in the Russian Federation. An internationally acknowledged center of academic excellence, it is routinely listed among top 15 institutions of higher education in the country. In October, 2009 the University received the high federal status. This became the logical continuation of the 210-year history of the development of Kazan University. KFU is a bright example of a classical university – source of fundamental knowledge and constant development. The main center of higher education for a vast region, KFU today employs more than 3,200 faculty members and trains over 47,000 students (of them about 30,000 students in Kazan campus) who follow over 300 undergraduate and post-graduate degree programs. Kazan University has been training international students since 1977. In these years more than a thousand graduates received KFU diplomas. At the moment over 1500 international students from more than 90 countries follow academic programs of the University.

The University has the preparatory school for the foreigners which trains the students for admission to the programs in humanities, medicine and biology, natural sciences and economics.
